A Bar for Everyone: The Silence
A man who has done everything right and feels nothing walks into a bar that was not there yesterday, sets his phone down, and the voice in his head finally goes quiet.
He has the job, the responsibilities, the unread messages, and the kind of tiredness that passes for functioning. Sitting alone in his parked car, he realizes that doing everything right has taken him as far from himself as he has ever been. So he walks around the corner and finds a bar he has never seen before. The sign says it is for everyone. Inside, nobody is impressive and nobody is pretending. Before he orders, the bartender sets a drink in front of him and says he looked like he needed something that does not ask questions. He puts his phone face down, and the running commentary in his head stops. In the quiet he can finally see the room: the man laughing too hard, the woman saying she is fine, the couple waiting for the other one to go first. Nobody here is fine. Everybody is here. For the first time in years, so is he.
Nobody in the bar was fine. Everybody was there.
