The Secrets Old People Keep: The Locked Years

Drama / Mystery / Generational Thriller20–25 minConcept

Three old friends sit through a family wedding at Harmon Baptist knowing the bride’s family is built on a lie they told in 1966. Before the vows are done, one of them stands up.

Harmon Baptist, a Saturday afternoon. Charles, Karen and Mr. Wang sit in the last pew while the grandchildren get married up front. Charles is the man the town trusts. Karen has kept to herself for forty years. Mr. Wang is the quiet one, and he is the only one who still knows the whole story. A dropped program, an old hymn and a line in the vows pull the three of them back to a summer in the sixties: a relationship nobody was allowed to see, a pregnancy hidden to save two families’ names, a child raised as somebody else’s. The couple at the altar talks about legacy. Mr. Wang gets to his feet. It takes him a while to get the words out. Then he says a name, and the church goes quiet.

Forty years is a long time to sit in the back pew.
